Multi-language support

Check which languages each Ingrid product supports, what Ingrid translates for you, and which language code to use.

Use this article to check which languages each Ingrid product supports, understand what Ingrid translates for you and what you translate yourself, and find the right language code for your integration.

This article is for retailers selling in more than one language, and for the developers integrating Ingrid. Ingrid presents your delivery experience in your shopper's own language: in the checkout, on the tracking page, in the returns portal and in delivery notifications. You do not translate Ingrid's own wording; that ships with Ingrid. What you translate is the wording you created yourself.

Language coverage is not the same across Ingrid products. A language available in the Ingrid Checkout widget (Ingrid Promise) is not automatically available in Ingrid Engage tracking and notifications, or in Ingrid Care returns. The supported languages table in this article is the authoritative list.

How Ingrid multi-language support works

Ingrid chooses the shopper's language in four steps:

  1. You pass a locale when you create an Ingrid checkout session, for example sv or de-at.

  2. Ingrid matches the locale to the closest supported language for that Ingrid product.

  3. Content configured in the Ingrid Merchant Platform is shown in that language.

  4. If a translation is missing, Ingrid falls back to your default language rather than showing an empty value.

The fallback is why an unsupported locale never breaks an Ingrid checkout. It also means a shopper silently sees your default language instead of their own. If a market matters to you, check the language in the supported languages table rather than relying on the fallback.

What Ingrid translates for you, and what you translate

Teams most often get this part wrong, so it is worth being precise. The table below shows which wording Ingrid translates and which wording you translate yourself:

What

Who provides the translation

Example

Ingrid's own interface wording

Ingrid: built in, no setup

Buttons, field labels, error messages, "estimated delivery"

Your delivery content

You: set up per language

Delivery category names, custom text, warning text, category labels

So "Ingrid multi-language support works out of the box" and "you need to add translations" are both true, of different things. Ingrid's wording is translated the moment you pass a supported locale. Your own delivery category names appear in whatever language you typed them in, until you add a translation for each language you serve.

Adding translations for delivery categories is covered in Setting up translations.

Languages supported by each Ingrid product

The table below shows which languages each Ingrid product supports. ✓ means the language is available in that Ingrid product. Where two codes are shown, the second is the Ingrid Care returns format: Ingrid Care returns run on a separate back office and use uppercase codes with underscores. Use the code that matches the Ingrid product you are integrating.

Totals: the Checkout, upsell and product page widgets support 52 languages · the FAQ widget 52 · Ingrid Engage tracking 42 · Ingrid Care returns 36 · Ingrid Engage notifications 26.

Good to know about Ingrid multi-language support

  • The three Ingrid Promise delivery widgets share one language set. The Checkout, upsell and product page widgets support the same 52 languages. The FAQ widget also supports 52 languages, but not quite the same ones: the FAQ widget adds English (UK) and does not include Finnish (Swedish).

  • Ingrid Engage notifications have the narrowest language coverage. If you rely on Ingrid Engage delivery notification emails or SMS (text messages) in a specific market, check the language in the table first. Several languages available elsewhere in Ingrid are not available for notifications.

  • Ingrid Care returns use their own language codes. Because Ingrid Care returns run on a separate back office, their locale codes are uppercase and use underscores (NL_BE, not nl-be). Sending a widget-style code to Ingrid Care returns will not match.

  • A missing translation never breaks an Ingrid checkout: Ingrid falls back to your default language.

  • Adding a language to your setup is not the same as Ingrid supporting it. The table shows what Ingrid can display. What your shoppers actually see also depends on the translations you have entered for your own delivery categories.
