What does this enable?

Merchants running Shopify can connect their store to Ingrid Returns without manual API credential setup. The integration installs through the Shopify app Ingrid – Returns and Exchanges, which handles authentication and shop provisioning automatically. Once connected, order data flows into Ingrid Returns, customers can initiate returns through the returns portal, and refunds are issued back to Shopify without manual steps in Shopify Admin. Exchanges create new Shopify orders that enter the merchant's fulfillment queue.

The integration also supports multi-currency stores through Shopify Markets, so refunds are calculated in the currency the customer originally paid in.

What is it?

The Shopify integration is an ecommerce connector that links Shopify stores to Ingrid Returns. It uses Shopify's secure app installation flow, retrieves order and product data automatically, and supports both refund and exchange flows. Multi-currency support, GDPR-compliant data handling, and exchange order creation are available with the standard integration.

Key capabilities:

  • Automatic shop setup at install time

  • Order and product data sync

  • Multi-currency support via Shopify Markets

  • Free and paid exchange flows

  • GDPR-compliant data handling

Use cases

Standard merchant onboarding

A Shopify merchant installs the Ingrid Returns app from the Shopify App Store. The shop is created in Ingrid Returns automatically, and the merchant can process returns immediately.

Multi-currency merchants

Merchants using Shopify Markets sell in multiple currencies. Ingrid Returns reads the customer-facing currency from the order and uses it for refund calculations.

Exchange-enabled merchants

Merchants who offer product exchanges can configure both free and paid exchange flows. Free exchanges create a live Shopify order immediately; paid exchanges generate a draft order with a payment link the customer completes.

GDPR-compliant operations

The integration registers Shopify's mandatory data privacy webhooks automatically during install — covering customer data requests, customer data deletion, and shop data deletion.

Setup

For step-by-step setup, the full settings reference, and required Shopify scopes, see the Shopify Configuration Guide.

When logging in through the Shopify plugin, the merchant has admin rights in Ingrid Returns. Additional users can be created in the Returns Back-office settings.

Implementation examples

Example 1: Standard return with automatic refund

Scenario: A customer returns two items from a Shopify order.

Flow:

  1. The customer initiates a return through the Ingrid Returns portal, selecting two line items.

  2. A return label is generated; the customer ships the parcel.

  3. The warehouse confirms receipt of both items.

  4. Ingrid Returns issues the refund automatically through Shopify.

  5. The refund appears against the original order in Shopify Admin.

Result: The order shows the refund against the original line items. No manual steps required in Shopify Admin.

Example 2: Paid exchange with customer surcharge

Scenario: A customer returns a size S jacket and wants a size L. The exchange requires an additional payment.

Flow:

  1. The customer selects the replacement variant in the Ingrid Returns portal and confirms the exchange.

  2. A draft order is created in Shopify for the new item.

  3. The customer receives a payment link by email.

  4. The customer pays the difference through Shopify's hosted payment page.

  5. The draft order converts to a live order and enters the merchant's fulfillment queue.

Result: A new paid Shopify order for the replacement appears in fulfillment. The original return proceeds through the standard return flow in parallel.

Additional notes

  • The integration is installed via the Ingrid – Returns and Exchanges app on the Shopify App Store.

  • Shopify Markets multi-currency is supported. Stores selling in a single currency are unaffected.
