What is it?

Placeholders & tooltips provide inline guidance to shoppers as they fill out the address form:

  • Placeholders — example text shown inside each address field, illustrating the expected input format (e.g., "123 Main Street")

  • Tooltips — help icons next to fields that, when tapped or hovered, show extra explanatory text

Both reduce input errors, speed up form completion, and make the checkout experience clearer and more intuitive. Placeholders & tooltips is a setting of Ingrid Address Form.

Key benefits

For retailers

  • Lower address input errors — contextual guidance prevents formatting mistakes before they happen

  • Higher checkout completion — clearer fields reduce abandonment at the address step

  • Lower failed delivery costs — better address data means fewer redelivery attempts

  • Localized per market, with no setup — placeholder and tooltip text is tuned to each country's address format and language out of the box

For shoppers

  • Clear field expectations — placeholder examples show exactly what to type

  • Inline help when needed — tooltips offer extra guidance without cluttering the form

  • Country-relevant cues — guidance reflects the local address format

How it works

  1. Each address field shows predefined placeholder text inside the field

  2. Fields that benefit from extra context have a small tooltip icon

  3. Shoppers hover or tap the tooltip icon to see additional guidance

  4. Both placeholders and tooltips are localized to the shopper's country and language

Use cases

Country-specific placeholders

Each country's placeholder reflects its local address format. Shoppers see the placeholder pattern that matches their market — postal code structure, address line conventions, and so on.

Optional-field guidance via tooltips

For fields that are optional or country-specific (apartment numbers, regions, business identifiers), tooltips provide extra context so shoppers know whether and how to fill the field.

Configuration

Placeholders and tooltips are set up as part of Ingrid Address Form, and defaults are maintained per country and language.

The text itself is not configurable per retailer. Exactly like field labels, placeholder and tooltip wording is part of Ingrid's standard localization — it follows the locale your integration sends, rather than a per-retailer setting. If a country's default text looks wrong or a translation is missing, contact your Ingrid contact.

FAQ

Q: What's the difference between a placeholder and a tooltip?
A: A placeholder is example text inside the field, visible until the shopper starts typing. A tooltip is contextual help triggered by tapping or hovering an icon — it stays visible while reading.

Q: Are placeholders and tooltips localized?
A: Yes. Both are localized per country and language.

Q: Can we change the placeholder or tooltip wording?
A: No. Placeholder and tooltip text is part of Ingrid's localization and is not configurable per retailer. What a shopper sees depends on the locale your integration sends — for example, en-US and en-GB produce different wording. If a country's default text is wrong, contact your Ingrid contact.

Q: Do tooltips appear on every address field?
A: No. Tooltips appear only on fields that benefit from extra guidance (e.g., apartment number, VAT ID, state). Standard fields like first name and last name typically do not have tooltips.

Q: Are placeholders and tooltips visible on mobile?
A: Yes. Tooltip icons are tappable on mobile; placeholders display inside fields as on desktop.

Q: Do placeholders affect form validation?
A: No. Placeholders are visual guidance only — they are not submitted as values.

Q: Can placeholder content vary per country?
A: Yes. Default placeholders are tuned to each country's address format and conventions.
