What is it?
Address validation ensures that every delivery address entered during checkout is complete, correctly formatted, and usable for carrier booking and successful delivery.
Unlike simple format checks, Ingrid's validation works through a four-step process that catches errors progressively — from intelligent suggestions at the point of entry to verification against global mapping services.
Address validation is part of Ingrid Address form.
Key benefits
99%+ valid address collection — the combination of all four validation steps brings address accuracy above the 99% mark
No checkout blocking — shoppers are prompted to double-check suspicious addresses but are never prevented from completing their purchase
Reduces failed deliveries — validated addresses mean fewer incorrect shipments, redelivery costs, and return-to-sender scenarios
Works across markets — validation adapts to local address formats and conventions per country
How it works: four-step validation
Step 1: Address proposal
Ingrid's address form uses autocomplete, autofill, field placeholders, and tooltips to help shoppers enter a fully valid address from the start. By guiding the input process, this step alone resolves up to 95% of address validation challenges.
Step 2: Address format validation
Because Ingrid uses country-specific address forms, every address is validated on format — field length, character type, and completeness. No address can be submitted with missing required fields. This ensures the collected address is usable for carrier booking.
Step 3: Address verification
Before using the address, Ingrid validates it against mapping services (Google globally, Loqate for US addresses). If the address doesn't match or if a mismatch is detected, the shopper is prompted to double-check.
This step brings valid address collection above the 99% mark.
Importantly, shoppers can still proceed with a manually entered address even if the mapping service doesn't recognize it — this protects conversion for edge cases like new streets or recent developments where official address databases lag behind.
Step 4: Storing and pre-filling
Once a valid address is used for a purchase, it is stored in the shopper's address book. On their next visit, Ingrid pre-fills the previously used address — eliminating the need to re-enter it and preventing the possibility of introducing new errors on repeat purchases.
Validation providers
Provider | Coverage | Capabilities |
Global | Autocomplete, address matching, place suggestions | |
Loqate | US only | Autocomplete, address matching, grouped suggestions |
The provider is configured per merchant. Both work the same way in terms of validation — the main difference is that Loqate groups suggestions by area while Google shows a flat list. Loqate is available for the US market only, so Google is the provider for all other markets.
Use cases
Reducing redelivery costs
A retailer shipping 50,000 orders per month sees 2% failed deliveries due to address errors — costing approximately $5-10 per redelivery attempt. Ingrid's four-step validation catches address issues at checkout, pushing accuracy above 99%. Even a 1% improvement in address accuracy across 50,000 orders translates to 500 fewer failed deliveries per month.
International expansion without address headaches
A retailer expanding from the Nordics into Germany, UK, and US faces different address formats per market. German addresses need street + house number in one field, UK addresses need postcodes in a specific format, and US addresses require a State field. Ingrid's country-specific validation adapts automatically — each market gets the right form structure, field order, and error messages in the local language.
Improving conversion for mobile shoppers
A retailer sees high checkout abandonment on mobile devices, largely due to address entry friction. With autocomplete, mobile shoppers type just 3 characters and select from suggestions — all fields auto-fill. For returning shoppers, the address book eliminates typing entirely. The result: faster mobile checkout and higher completion rates.
FAQ
Q: Does validation block shoppers from completing checkout?
A: No. If an address can't be verified, the shopper is prompted to review it but can always proceed. This protects conversion while improving data quality.
Q: What percentage of addresses are validated successfully?
A: The four-step process achieves 99%+ valid address collection across markets.
Q: Does validation work for all countries?
A: Yes. Format validation works for all countries with country-specific forms. Mapping-service verification uses Google globally; Loqate is available for the US market only.
Q: Can we use Loqate outside the US?
A: No. Loqate is US only. Google provides verification for all other markets.
Q: Can validation catch addresses that don't exist?
A: Validation checks addresses against mapping services, which catch most non-existent addresses. However, to protect conversion, shoppers are never hard-blocked — they are prompted to review instead.
Q: Is there an additional cost for address validation?
A: Address validation is included as part of the Ingrid checkout. Loqate-powered validation for the US market may involve additional considerations — contact your Ingrid team for details.
