What is it?

The Magento integration connects Ingrid Returns to your Magento 2 store. Once connected, returns initiated through the Ingrid Returns widget are synchronized with Magento — orders are fetched directly, refunds are issued as credit memos, and exchange orders are created automatically. It connects through Magento's standard REST API using OAuth 1.0a, with no plugins or webhooks required on the Magento side.

The integration follows the same standardized pattern used across all Ingrid Returns platform connectors, so it participates in the same returns lifecycle as Shopify, Centra, and other supported platforms. Magento 2 only — Magento 1.x is not supported.

New here? Start with the Magento configuration guide for step-by-step setup, then use the Refunds, Exchanges, and Payments articles for the details of each flow.

Key benefits

  • Automated returns workflow — order lookup, credit-memo refunds, and exchange order creation happen automatically. No manual credit memos in Magento Admin.

  • No plugins or webhooks — connects via Magento's native REST API, so onboarding stays light.

  • Native Magento experience — exchange orders appear in your standard Magento order queue and fulfillment pipeline.

  • Faster refunds — the credit memo is issued automatically once the return passes quality check.

  • Cross-border ready — HS tariff codes and country of manufacture can be read from Magento product attributes and added to return-shipment customs declarations.

How it works

The integration handles the operations Ingrid Returns needs during a return: reading order data, issuing refunds, creating exchange orders, and fetching product information.

  • Order fetching — when a customer starts a return, Ingrid Returns fetches the order from Magento (by customer-visible order number or internal ID) to verify eligibility, populate line items, and calculate the refund. Returns are accepted on complete orders, and optionally on processing orders if enabled.

  • Refunds — when the return is confirmed at the warehouse, Ingrid Returns creates a credit memo on the original invoice and Magento routes the refund to the customer's original payment method. See Magento refunds.

  • Exchanges — when a customer selects a replacement item, Ingrid Returns creates a new order in Magento that enters your standard fulfillment queue. Timing is configurable per price list. See Magento exchanges.

  • Products & variants — configurable (parent) and simple (variant) products are resolved automatically, so the correct variant, SKU, and price appear on the return.

Use cases

Ideal for: Magento 2 merchants who want to automate the returns, refunds, and exchange workflow without adding plugins.

Common applications:

  • Automatic refunds issued to Magento when a return is approved at the warehouse

  • Size or variant exchanges created directly in Magento

  • Return eligibility gated on Magento order status

  • Correct customs data (HS codes, country of manufacture) on cross-border return labels

Configuration guide

Setup location: Returns Back-office → Settings → Admin → [Shop] → Edit ecom integration → Magento

Onboarding requirements: OAuth 1.0a credentials from Magento — Consumer Key, Consumer Secret, Access Token, and Access Token Secret. Create these in Magento Admin under System → Extensions → Integrations, granting API access to Orders, Invoices, Products, Catalog Inventory, and Credit Memos.

For the full step-by-step, all settings, and the optional customs attributes, see the Magento configuration guide.

FAQ

Q: Does the integration need a Magento plugin?
A: No. It uses Magento's standard REST API — no plugins or webhooks required.

Q: Which Magento versions are supported?
A: Magento 2 only. Magento 1.x is not supported.

Q: How are refund amounts calculated?
A: From the customer-currency price fields on the original Magento order, minus any deductions (e.g. return shipping) configured in your price setup.

Q: Where do exchange orders appear?
A: In your standard Magento order queue, like any other order. Your team fulfills them the same way.

Q: Does Ingrid Returns restock items in Magento?
A: No — automatic restock is not supported for Magento. Warehouse restock decisions are recorded in Ingrid Returns (visible in the Back-office and via the Public API) and applied manually in Magento Admin, or through your own inventory sync.

Q: A refund failed with an invoice error — why?
A: A refund requires the Magento order to have exactly one invoice, in a paid state. Orders with zero or multiple invoices, or an unpaid invoice, must be corrected in Magento Admin before retrying. See Magento refunds.
